Taking the littleswiftskiers on Holiday...
Posted Tue 20th OctoberSo, you’re taking the family on a skiing holiday, and you can all hardly wait - especially the kids! Here are our top tips and locations for your trip...
Top Five Tips
- Save it! - If it’s too expensive, you don’t have to buy your skiing gear - you could hire it or borrow from friends. For ski gear hire, check out Ski Stuff or Ski Togs!
- Check, Check and Check Again - Take it from us, there’s plenty you’ve got to remember when packing for a skiing holiday, especially when you’ve got several little ones to pack for too! Make a checklist, and make sure that you’ve got everything you need - you don’t want the hassle of having forgotten something when you arrive...
- Practice Makes Perfect - You want to make the most of your time on the slopes, so why not get some family practice in before you go and avoid spending the first few days picking up the basics again. Take a look at the UK’s indoor and dry slopes here.
- Exerskise! - The mountains can often be physically demanding and challenging, whatever your age is! Getting the whole family physically prepared and fit for the trip is definitely a good idea.
- Childcare - It’s best to book this well in advance, as demand is often very high, especially during peak times. Plan when you want to spend time with the kids - afternoon, morning or evening, or perhaps you want the freedom of a full day to yourself on the slopes! Either way, booking this early won’t do any harm.
Top Five Resorts
- Avoriaz, France: A car-free village, many families love Avoriaz for its safety. However, it’s the quality and convenience of the childcare that Avoriaz has to offer which makes it a real family favourite - located in the centre of the village, and run by a former pro. The resort has dedicated Children’s slopes, whilst it boasts one of the largest water parks in any of the world’s ski hotspots.
- La Plagne, France: La Plagne is often a popular resort with families due to the number of intermediate slopes the resort has on offer; perfect for teenagers. The destination itself is essentially comprised of ten villages, several of which have nurseries for the youngest among the group.
- Saas Fee, Switzerland: Another traffic-free resort, Saas Fee is very much a rural haven, the perfect place to go for relaxing strolls with the whole family. The older kids will love it too, with two terrain parks, one of which has world-class facilities including an enormous half-pipe.
- Obergurgl, Austria: Very much a family friendly village, it’s big enough to be explored but not so big that the kids are likely to get lost. The ski school instructors speak excellent English, whilst the childcare options are extremely good.
- Levi, Finland: Whilst the northern region of the country may be famous in Britain for taking the kids to visit Santa, there’s plenty for the older kids to do as well, including snowmobiling and dog sledding. Most of the hotels have an enormous range of indoor activities on offer, including one with 17 themed swimming pools - plenty to keep the kids occupied in a safe environment.
