Ellmau is one of the most stunning ski resorts in Austria. It is situated at the bottom of the Wilder Kaiser Mountain Range and boasts spectacular views. Ellmau Guide

This resort has a reputation for being an excellent family destination. This is due, in part, to the brilliant facilities for beginners. There is easy access to the lifts for beginners from the village, so that they can get to the wide and gentle slopes without struggling. The snow conditions are good, owing mostly to the fact that Ellmau is on the north side of the ski area.

This means that the runs are kept in the shade for most of the day. To get up to the mountains you can either take the Hartkaiser mountain railway or by chairlift access. The railway shows off the gorgeous scenery in the area, but can sometimes be a little crowded at peak times.

Activities

If you want to take a break from skiing, there is plenty to entertain you at Ellmau. For a traditional winter feel you could take your family on a sleigh ride. These are very popular with children in particular. There is also a swimming pool centre to keep children entertained and to help adults relax. Adults can revive their aching muscles in the sauna or steam bath after a heavy day skiing. In addition to these activities, Ellmau also offers tennis courts and squash courts for the more active visitor.

Ellmau is a popular hiking destination. If you are visiting the village for some time you may want to explore the hiking opportunities depending on the weather at the time. The village is also known for its mountain biking opportunities. You can arrange to go on mountain biking tours around the area for very reasonable prices.

Nightlife

The nightlife in Ellmau is vibrant and lively. There is plenty to do when it goes dark here. The village boasts some fantastic bars with live entertainment to ensure you are never bored. Visit the popular Husky bar for quiz nights, these are very popular with visitors. The bars are typically fairly exclusive and some cater to high end customers. If you are looking for family entertainment in the evening, head out on a Tuesday. Every Tuesday the village hosts a Sommernacht event where there are live entertainers on the streets and markets sell local produce. The resort also offers an apres-ski programme. Each week they have a programme of activities to suit families, these include ski shows and live entertainment.

Eating Out

Ellmau is a vibrant village with plenty of charm and character. This is reflected in the resort’s restaurants. Ellmau has a good selection of restaurants and cafes which lie close to the centre of the village within easy walking distance from most of the village accommodation. You can find traditional cuisine such as fondue for affordable prices. There are also restaurants catering for those who wish to sample a range of international dishes, this includes a Pizzeria. There are restaurants to suit almost any budget. However, most prices are very reasonable.

Accommodation

The accommodation in Ellmau is second to none. You are spoilt for choice, as the selection of different places to stay is wide and varied. There is something for almost every budget including chalets, hotels and lodges. Although most accommodation is in guest houses and hotels, there is also a great deal of luxury accommodation for those looking for an extra special stay. Ellmau even boasts its very own 5 star hotel, the only 5 star in the region.

Getting there and away

Travelling from the UK to Ellmau is easy. The resort is almost an equal distance from both Innsbruck airport and Salzburg airport. There are regular flights to both of these airports from across the UK. The airports are only around 30 minutes away from Ellmau so you don’t have to travel a vast distance to get to your accommodation. You can arrange for a transfer or a taxi to take you from the airport to the resort.
