The Beginner Visits...France

the-beginner 1

I’m back. Once more my bags have been packed (and flights paid for) and I’ve been sent off to the other side of the world (by which I mean France, a nation which is a comparatively short two hour flight away).

Yes - for the second time I have been asked for my naive and uninformed opinion on one of the World’s most popular skiing destinations. Read on, dear readerers.

FRANCE - LES MENUIRES

Excitingly, following my “good start” in Andorra, I was now ready to only have Ski School lessons during the morning - meaning in the afternoons I had a free run in the three valleys to, presumably, cause havoc everywhere I went. (Spoiler: I didn’t.)

Les Menuires is rather a stunning place to gaze out across of a morning, especially with the crisp and soothing chill to the air which accompanies a walk out on one’s hotel balcony. If you look at the picture above, you’ll see the view I woke up to each morning. Not too shabby, not too shabby at all.

The skiing wasn’t too bad either, and it was an incredibly refreshing (Side Note: also terrifying) experience to ski off on my own during the afternoons. I stuck to the greens and blues, mind.

This time around I’d done my research about where I was going. I’d heard the place billed as “the perfect way to explore the three valleys without the expense”, and how it was the ideal gateway to the World’s largest skiing area.

This certainly rang true, Les Menuires offering me the perfect opportunity to develop my skills in an unpretentious environment. It has the perfect combination of landscape, affordability and challenging slopes.

In truth, I found I had little energy to fully tackle the nightlife on offer in the resort. I did, however, enjoy one rather eventful evening in the renowned ‘Leeberty’ bar in Les Bruyeres. It’s definitely worth a visit.

A personal highlight of the trip would surely be lunch at le Tilbury. I cannot recommend highly enough their double cheeseburger. I’m aware it’s not quite the authentic French cuisine I should have been delving into, but anyway.

Unfortunately, this is the last you’ll hear from me. You see, I’m no longer technically a beginner. I’m told I’ve progressed particularly well during my two skiing trips, and that now I am brushing into the intermediate category. My opinion, therefore, is no longer that of a total novice.

I can no longer offer you my impartial and uninfluenced opinions on the globe’s finest ski resorts, meaning for now, at least, it’s goodbye.

The Beginner’s Rating: 8/10

Next Time: I hand over to The Expert - who’s jetting off to Verbier, Switzerland.
