Folgarida Guide

Situated in the heart of the Brenta Wildlife Park at an altitude of thirteen hundred metres, Folgarida sits on the road that leads to the Campo Carlo Magno Pass. The name Folgarida is said to be derived from the “filcaretum” that means “the place of ferns”. The Brenta Wildlife Park has more than eighty lakes and houses one of the most extensive glaciers in Europe the Adamello. Wildlife here includes bear, deer, chamois and eagles.

Folgarida has an impressive accessible ski area covering 120 kilometres of slopes and runs and is a good place for beginners. The ski school is at mid station and is easily reached by gondola.

This resort is acclaimed for its blue runs that give beginners the chance to get to grips with the sport. There is also a good selection of intermediate runs with enough tree shelter, mileage and bumps to keep the more experienced skier happy.

There is also a good choice of off piste skiing for the expert and the snowboarder will find the same area gives them some interesting sport. One of the highlights of the skiing here are the excellent links with Marilleva and Madonna de Campigio meaning that skiers can move around in one hundred and twenty kilometres of ski area, all set in the heart of some of the best scenery in the Alps.

There are two ski schools in the resort and one specialist snowboarding school.

If you fancy a break from the slopes there are a selection of other activities for you to enjoy. There is an ice skating rink, cinema and a bowling alley. For something different take to the slopes for the twice weekly night skiing when the town’s slopes are lit up.

The accommodation in Folgarida is set in a pine forest on the main Val de Sole- Madonna de Campigio road. The choice ranges from hotels to bed and breakfast and timeshare apartments.

The four star Hotel Luna is only 200 metres from the ski lifts and is close to the local cinema and “meeting area”. The hotel is also a wellness centre and offers sauna facilities to relax in after a day on the slopes. The hotel also has heated ski and boot lockers.

The residence, La Moretina offers bed and breakfast apartments and runs a ski bus service to the foot of the slopes. The area also has a timeshare community and apartments are often available for private rental, ideal for the larger group or family.

The apres ski here is held in the plentiful bars and clubs. There is even a selection of discos playing European music. The most famous local venue is the Eta Beta Bar which is actually underneath the end of the piste in the town square.

This has a great atmosphere and is home to some excellent wine. For a livelier scene at night take the trip into legendary Madonna di Campigio.

Folgarida has some excellent restaurants. The Hotel Alaska is the place to go for some barbecued food and if you want a break half way down the Casino blue run then stop off at the little wooden shack where some mulled wine will set you up for the rest of your ski.

Folgarida is not as lively or as upmarket as some other ski resorts but as a starting point for the would be skier, or as a destination for families, it has a lot to offer.

The slopes are quieter than in the more hectic resorts giving the beginner plenty of time to get to grips with their new sport. It is good for families as well, as it’s a warm welcoming little resort that suits the needs of families who don’t want to be kept awake by revellers until the early hours. Its proximity to Madonna di Campigio means that the more active lifestyle is easily reached.
