Les Arcs Guide
Arc 1600 was the first village to open within the resorts and has retained its compact village style and quieter atmosphere, although there are still a number of shops for you to look around. It is a pretty resort which sits within the trees and enjoys stunning views across the valley towards the famous Mont Blanc.
Other activities available: Snow-shoeing, Ski-biking, Cinema
Eating Out: As one of the quieter locations within the Les Arc resort, you won’t find endless nightclubs here. However, the restaurant ‘Chez Fernand’ offers home cooked dishes from the region, as does the ‘Au Petit Loup’ which predominantly specialises in traditional Savoyard cuisine.
Arc 1800 based at 1,800m (5,940ft)
Arc 1800 is the largest of all the Arc resorts where you will find a much livelier atmosphere. It is probably the best location for a group travelling together of mixed skiing ability, as Arc 1800 provides excellent access to a wide selection of piste gradings. Children and beginners will be taught on wider and easier nursery slopes and intermediates will test themselves a little further with the brilliant choice of blue and red runs which are situated just above the resort. For those more experienced skiers who like to spend the day exploring, Arc 1800 is conveniently located to join up with the Vanoise Express and the La Plagne ski area.
Other Activities Available: Snow-shoeing, Ski-biking, Cinema, Ice Rink, Bowling
Eating Out & Nightlife: You’ll be spoilt for choice at Arc 1800. However, if it is live music you want, then visit the ‘Red Hot Saloon’ bar located in Galerie des Villards. Another great location is the disco at Arc 1800, ‘The Apokalypse,’ where you can dance the night away. Alternatively, the restaurant ‘La Plante d’Baton’ offers very traditional French cuisine, along with a reasonably priced children’s menu.
Arc 1950 & 2000
Arc 1950 is the newest resort within the Les Arc destination and is predominantly a purpose made luxury self-catering village designed for visitors who want to simply ski in and out of their resort. High quality apartments nestle in the heart of the pine forest, with the bonus of an outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi area. It is much quieter than Arc 1800 here and retains more village charm.
Arc 1950 offers a good choice of bars and ‘La Belle Pinte’ is a large Irish pub which is a great location for a drink and a chat with friends after a day’s skiing. ‘Chez Anne’ is the restaurant to go to if you are looking for fine Savoyard French dining. Alternatively, if you feel the desire to party till you drop, then make sure you take a visit to the ‘Le Club 1950′ nightclub.
Highest of them all is Arc 2000 which is positioned on the opposite side of the mountain to Arc 1600 and Arc 1800. It sits in a secluded basin at the start of the Aiguille Rouge Glacier (at 3226m) which offers guaranteed snow for those dedicated skiers. This resort’s main appeal is the immediate access it gives to some of the highest and most demanding skiing in the area, which is why it traditionally attracts the more experienced skier.
Other Activities Available: Snow-shoeing, Ski-biking, Cinema, Ice Rink
Although Arc 2000 is one of the quieter resorts, it does have its own nightclub, ‘The KL92′. If you have any energy left over from a day on the slopes this could be the perfect venue. Live music plays at ‘El Latino Loco’ which cultivates a lovely informal atmosphere and a more relaxed feel. For typical alpine dining, ‘Chez Eux’ is well known for fine fondue and gastro meals.
Also In The Area
For an adrenaline thrill like no other, you have to experience a ride on a bobsleigh run. This is not just your standard bobsleigh, this is the actual Olympic bobsleigh run located just a short bus ride away from Les Arc in the ski resort of La Plagne. Open from mid December to mid March, prices start from around £40 per person and it is well worth a visit.
