Westendorf Guide

The village of Westendorf lies at 789m above sea level and the snow range covers 789-1882m. Westendorf has been connected to the Ski Welt area by a new gondola link to Brixen, giving it access to 279km of marked piste in total, available on the SkiWelt Pass.

The village itself enjoys 43km of piste to itself with an abundance of runs suitable for beginners and intermediates, as well as numerous challenging runs for the more expert skiers. Westendorf is also a great family choice for skiing holidays and there is an excellent ski school for children. Bobo’s Mini Club caters for those aged 3-4 while Bobo’s Kids Club caters for those aged 5-14.

There is a fantastic children’s area for the younger ones while the older children can take part in some races and a party at the end of the week’s lessons.

There are countless ski lifts in the area, meaning that there are seldom large queues. For the beginners a gentle ski area is easily accessible from the village, with an easy chairlift taking you up and helping to calm some of those nerves you might have.

There are also many interesting trails for intermediate skiers which run down through trees and past farmhouses as they head back to the village. The trails are well maintained and allow for skiers to build up confidence. For the more advanced skiers, the size of the Ski Welt area offers you plenty of choice and variety.

The off-piste skiing can be excellent and there are many connections that take you to neighbouring resorts in the SkiWelt areas to sample their delights as well.

For those who wish to do a bit of travelling whilst on holiday in the Alps, Westendorf is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area. From the village you can take day trips to both Innsbruck and Salzburg. Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol state in Austria, located in a valley with a dramatic alpine backdrop.

The city is a lovely place to visit, offering a charming town centre with some historic buildings and a friendly atmosphere. Salzburg is the city of Mozart and has a beautiful Old Town to explore. Salzburg has some superb Baroque architecture, dreamy spires, a picture-perfect setting and many interesting places to see; it is well worth a visit.

Other activities available in the resort are enough to keep anyone busy. Sleigh rides are always popular with children and adults alike, whilst winter walks allow you to explore the beautiful surroundings at a slower pace to take everything in. There is also ice skating, tobogganing and some traditional Tyrolean evening entertainment on offer, while the kids might want to go for a game of bowling.

Eating Out

There are many eating out options in Westendorf. You will be able to find lots of places to try some traditional Austrian cuisine, which is hearty and very tasty. One of the local specialities is the Tyroler Grostl, which is a mixture of potatoes, onions, bacon and cheese. You can also try Strudel, Schnitzel and Pommes.

Many of the restaurants in the village are hotel based, but some highly recommended restaurants are the ‘Jakowirt’ and the ‘Schermer’, which both have good reputations for serving some excellent meals. Since the resort is fairly small and family based, the nightlife can be quieter than at other resorts.

Nightlife

There are, however, some lovely pubs and bars where you can enjoy a few drinks, dance and listen to live music. The ‘Village Pub’ and the ‘Moskito Bar’ are recommended, while ‘Inns Moment’ has live music and ‘Gerry’s’ even gives you a chance to do some table dancing!

Westendorf is a popular ski resort amongst families and groups of friends because of its wide range of accommodation and its excellent skiing. Since it has been linked to the SkiWelt area it is now one of the best choices for skiing holidays in Austria, as it has variety and a choice of trails available for people of all abilities. The village itself is beautiful and the activities and atmosphere are some of the best.
