The skiing area has been developed and modernised in recent years, making the resort the perfect choice for a holiday. The nine ski lifts that operate in the area are efficient; they can transport up to 8800 visitors per hour. There are also opportunities for snowboarders, with a Fun Park available to practise moves and the ski school will help novice skiers to learn the ropes and intermediate skiers to perfect their skills.
Since Werfenweng is predominantly family orientated, most of the apres-ski in the resort is activity based. However, the hotels usually provide friendly bars where you can have a few drinks and chat about your day’s skiing.
The Gut Wenghof Family Resort Werfenweng is one of the highly recommended hotels and is a great base for holidaying in the area. There is a national buffet as well as an international buffet and also restaurants which offer pizza and fondue. If you fancy a change of scene there are other guesthouse bars and restaurants to sample as well.
Some of the activities available in and around Werfenweng are what makes it such a special and popular resort. It truly is a winter wonderland with many places to visit. Werfen is a nearby village, easily recognisable by the magnificent Hohenwerfen Fortress perched on the top of a hill.
One of the main attractions here is the largest ice cave in the world. The walls of ice, hanging icicles and enormous ice crystals are well worth a visit. Another area of interest is the medieval town of Hallein; here you will find an attractive town centre and some things to see; but the salt mines offer an interesting excursion too – these mines are what gave Salzburg its name and wealth.
There is also a stunning canyon, Liechtensteinklamm, that you can visit near St. Johann, developed in the late 19th century by members of the Pongau Alpine Club. It is a beautiful sight and a perfect photograph opportunity.
Another opportunity not to miss whilst staying in Werfenweng, is a day trip to Salzburg since it is only 45km away. The city has many attractions which will keep you busy throughout the day, including beautiful Baroque architecture, peaceful gardens and sites of cultural importance such as Mozart’s birthplace.
Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the dominating buildings in the city, standing on a rocky outcrop and giving Salzburg another dimension to the already dreamy skyline.
Werfenweng also has plenty of activities for you to enjoy. The toboggan run is 6km and is incredibly exhilarating; on the other hand you might enjoy taking a sleigh ride through the village, which gives you the chance to relax and enjoy the scenery.
There are many winter walking trails for you to explore at an even slower pace, you could take some snowshoes and trek through the unspoilt snow fields if you wish. One of the other popular activities in the alpine area is tandem paragliding flights, where you are taken into the air by a highly experienced instructor and glide over the winter wonderland landscape; a truly unforgettable experience.
Werfenweng is a popular resort for good reason. For those who are just learning to ski or those who need to build up their confidence, the trails around the village offer the perfect stage.
There is a good choice of runs while the village itself is charming and traditional.
